how to install microsoft fonts in Ubuntu 11.10


Ubuntu is a funny Operating System.You can do many things in it and customize it in your ways.Unlike the Microsoft Windows Operating System, Ubuntu is open to do anything.You can use tools and things of other Operating System.One of the example is using Microsoft fonts in Ubuntu applications.Microsoft has some nice fonts use in its applications.Some of these are Times New Roman, Arial, Georgia etc.

Ubuntu provides one package called “ttf-mscorefonts” which is collection of some good Microsoft fonts.You just have to install it to use those fonts.These fonts are used in LibreOffice, Openoffice, gimp etc.For installing Microsoft fonts you will need Synaptic Package Manager.So hope you have installed Synaptic Package Manager.Hare is the steps to install Microsoft fonts.The fonts provided by this package are given below.

5.Courier New (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)

9.Trebuchet (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)
10.Verdana (Bold, Italic, Bold Italic)

Install Microsoft fonts

1.If you have installed Synaptic package Manager then go to next step and if not then first install it by opening the Ubuntu Software center and searching the “Synaptic Package Manager” then click on install.This will install the Synaptic Package Manager.

2.Now Open the Synaptic Package Manager from the Ubuntu Home button and searching Synaptic Package Manager.

3.From the Synaptic Package Manager search for “ttf-mscorefonts” in the search box.Right click on it and select “Mark for installation”. Now click on “Apply”. This will start the installation process.

4.For checking whether the Microsoft fonts are installed or not, open any application like LibreOffice Writer or Gimp and select the fonts you will see the installed fonts in the list.
